Diabetes and what you should know about it is crucial to your health and you need to consider it in managing your daily life. It is never good news to hear about the possibility of diabetes or the attempt to live a normal life after you have developed the condition. There are some pretty simple things that if you do them each day are known to lower your chances for diabetes and help you live a healthier life.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, I am sure you know how to check your blood sugar. You should check it before meals and at bedtime. This insures that if there is a sudden change in your blood sugar levels, you know in advance to address the situation in a timely fashion lest an emergency arise.

Always pack a snack during a long flight to make sure your diabetes doesn’t cause issues

Some airlines offer free meals, the food can be heavily processed, and you may have to wait a long time to be fed. So it is wise to bring your own snack to ensure that your glucose levels stay where they’re supposed to be.

If you are diabetic, watch for symptoms of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.

These symptoms can include:

  • clammy hands
  • mouth numbness, and
  • feeling extremely thirsty.

Low blood sugar can lead to serious health complications if it is not immediately addressed. To counteract symptoms, eat a natural form of sugar and follow with a source of protein. Be sure to consult your doctors if symptoms do not improve.

One of the most difficult things to remember for a newly-diagnosed diabetic is the importance of monitoring glucose levels diligently.

Over time, failure to do so can lead to irreversible damage to the nerves and blood vessels throughout the entire body. These types of damage can lead to problems with emotional, cardiovascular, and sexual health.

Check your blood sugar before you go to bed, and if it’s low, bring it up with a quick snack if you have diabetes

This allows you to ensure that your levels are steady throughout the night. Otherwise, your levels might drop in the middle of the night, causing you to wake up with sweats and disorientation.

Cut down on simple carbohydrates

These foods, such as pasta and bread, cause your blood sugar levels to spike which may cause hyperglycemia and a need for more insulin; that may result in a hypoglycemic episode. Stick to complex carbohydrates such as whole grains in order to keep your blood sugar stable.

Don’t eat the “white” foods if you have diabetes.

This includes:

  • pasta and bread made from white flour
  • white rice
  • and white potatoes.

These all contain carbohydrates but don’t provide enough fiber or protein to help break them down in your body so you’ll avoid a massive blood sugar spike after eating them.

When you have diabetic issues, try to remain as active as possible

Park the car in a further away parking spot or take the stairs when they are an option. It is important to keep your overall immune system in as good as shape as possible and this helps to ensure you have a healthy circulation system.

You will reduce your body’s likelihood of developing diabetes and living through years of intense medical treatment, ongoing pain, and drastic changes to your diet if you follow all or some of these helpful tips.

They also make your body generally healthier, which is something everyone should strive for, regardless of their condition.
